BSNL Introduces WiMAX Services in Assam

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. has introduced its WiMAX broadband service for its users in Assam. WiMAX is the wireless broadband service which allows high internet speed.

BSNL has launched WiMax at Chaygaon in Kamrup district of Assam to offer high speed connectivity in rural area. Users can avail upto 7 Mbps broadband speed at a distance of 15 Km. WiMAX technology is the 4th generation wireless broadband service working in 2.5 GHz band
For WiMAX broadband service, BSNL has invested Rs 250 crore for optical fiber cable line in the state and is planning to invest Rs. 1200 crore for rural WiMAX. BSNL is planning to set up 843 mobile towers in the Northeast.
With BSNL WiMAX broadband speed users can experience video conferencing, tele-medicine service and tele-education along with payment of utility bills, issue of birth certificates, land records, vehicle registration etc.
For BSNL WiMAX broadband service users will be charged Rs. 140 for rural areas.
Mr. Pilot said, “We are now laying special emphasis and focus on setting up mobile towers and other communications facilities in the insurgency hit northeastern states and also in border areas. The Union Government has sanctioned Rs 250 crore for laying down an 800km optical fiber cable line in Assam to provide high-speed connectivity in the telecom sector.
In a bid to boots the Broadband service in North East, State operator BSNL will lay down the optical fibre cable network. The Centre will provide all help to boost connectivity in Assam and the Northeast and this is the first step in that direction.”
